Tarot Card Meanings: Major Arcana card IV, The Emperor

9th Jul 2008

Patriarchal Authority.  The Emperor is the supreme ruler with a focus on domination.  The Emperor has a tendency to neglect the ideas of community and social responsibility.  Some tarot card decks show an image of Alexander the Great as The Emperor.  The Emperor has great abilities within the realms of warfare and conquest.  He is the modern warlord who attempts to maintain control at the expense of his people.  The Emperor is very capable, and can efficiently run a country or a corporation.  The challenge for The Emperor is to open his heart and remember to take care of those less fortunate than himself.  With an eye to his riches and overindulgence, he has a tendency to ignore the destruction his quest for power brings.  The Emperor tarot card is often represented by a man with closed body language, i.e. his arms are crossed, and everything is tight and close to center.  If he can open himself up to his emotions, the love of the Goddess will begin to flow within himself and he can become a powerful, respected leader, loved by all.  Instead, The Emperor has a tendency to close himself off and trap himself within an energetic wall of selfishness and greed.

When the tarot card reader unveils the presence of The Emperor in a reading, the energy of the powerful dominating leader is in the reading, either representing an aspect of the questioner or someone else related to the answer from the tarot.  If tarot card lands upright, perhaps the boss is about to confront the questioner, or perhaps the questioner is considering doing something selfish herself.

The challenge when confronted with The Emperor tarot card is for the questioner to remember that we are all connected, from The Emperor to the beggar.  When The Emperor tarot card lands reversed, there is potential for The Emperor to open up to the flow of energy, and enjoy the joy of oneness with spirt.  The Emperor empathizes, and sees how he is connected to everyone else around him.

When The Emperor tarot card lands to the right, if you are using a circular tarot deck, The Emperor is in high form, seeking out future conquests.  He may be aggressively pursuing new plans for increasing his power.

If you are using circular tarot cards, The Emperor can also land to the left.  In this circumstance, The Emperor is somehow hampered, whether by external forces, or temperence in his own thoughts.  When The Emperor tarot card lands far to the left, The Emperor is clearly entertaining thoughts about others, and how his or her actions will affect others.

If The Emperor tarot card represents how you are feeling, you probably need a walk or a half hour in the hot tub.  Perhaps you have been hurt or offended, and are angry at someone.  Let it go, be here now and go sit on a rock or take a bike ride.  Getting out in nature helps us get out of our energy boxes surrounding our heads and bodies.  Getting active helps us release negative energies that can otherwise get stuck as tensions or pains in our bodies.  If The Emperor represents someone else in the tarot card reading, one can appeal to his better nature by reminding The Emperor of whom he connects with and can understand and love.
