The Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana of the Tarot
16th Mar 2008
The tarot card deck is made up of two sub-decks, the major arcana, and the minor arcana. The major arcana is composed of twenty-two cards, usually represented by roman numerals. The energy of the major arcana comes into play in different ways, and different tarot card readers look at the major arcana in different ways.
Some tarot card readers think of the major arcana as always representing forces outside the querent’s control. In this way, the ‘major’ arcana represents larger forces. Although this is sometimes the case when a major arcana card comes up in a card reading, it is not always the case, necessarily. A major arcana card can also come up in a reading when the issue represented is a major factor in the questioner’s life. Sometimes that major factor is entirely within the control of the questioner. Major arcana cards can also come up when the energy is one that is consistently repeated in the life of the questioner. I have found, in my tarot card readings, the ones for myself included, that these consistent issues are completely within the control of the questioner.
The major arcana cards include the Death card, that most people are familiar with, and the card of the Lovers. The minor arcana cards consist of four suits of fourteen cards each (cups, coins, wands and swords). Cards in the minor arcana include the four of cups, the six of coins, up through ten, and then there are the royal cards. In some decks, the royal cards consist of the princess, the prince, the queen and the king.
During the next post, we will start with the first card of the major arcana cards, the fool.
Thanks for reading the tarot card reader.
