I hope you have been enjoying our journey through the tarot cards. We have talked about several tarot card layouts, including how to ask a yes/no question, a three tarot card spread, a seven day tarot reading, a circular tarot layout, and today’s continuation of the Celtic Cross tarot spread.

Ninth card: inner hopes and fears

Tarot card nine is placed directly above card eight, creating the beginning of a vertical line. This tarot card will reflect the scariest fears the querent has about the situation at hand, i.e. what the querent thinks is the worst that can happen. This is what the tarot card reader will see if her client is mainly focused on the negative perspective. On the other hand, if the questioner is focused on positive aspects, or on the possibilities presented, tarot card nine will reveal the querent’s inner hopes of what is the best possible result.

Did the tarot card land upright or reversed?

The position of this card in the reading will provide the card reader additional clues as to which energies are manifesting currently in the querent’s life. Whether or not the position of the card is positive or negative depends on the card. Some cards are inherently positive, such as the wheel of fortune. This is one of my favorite cards, and ususally means the querent will get her wish. Of course, if the Wheel lands reversed, it usually means that the querent will get what she wants, but somehow will have to wait, or receive it in a way she did not expect and perhaps did not desire.

What information you receive about the position of the card, and its meaning must always consider also the cards around in the reading. All of the energies represented by the cards will interact. The tarot reader must always keep in mind the question when interpreting the individual cards, as you probably already know. Just a note, circular cards will give you much more information about how positive and negative the energies really are: usually the situation is not just black or white (and the querent is not absolutely acting in the negative or in the positive).
