Major Arcana tarot card I, The Magician
20th Apr 2008
The Magician is the second tarot card of the Major Arcana, and it comes just after the Fool. Like the Fool, the Magician still has about her a freshness, a non-tarnished-by-life feel about her. The Magician is able to transmute energy, and bend reality to his/her will. The Magician is about taking action, as the creative is brought from the mental energy of plans to the physical activity of production. An idea is realized into tangible form. It could be the beginning of a new endeavor or the affirmative support of a position.
The Magician is about outward, positive energy, directed at a goal. This card in a reading (if it lands upright) indicates a person who gets things done, or had just brought an idea to form, or a circumstance in which a dream has been realized in the tangible reality. Look to the surrounding cards and for card position in the reading for context, e.g. to see if you are dealing with a person or a circumstance. It may be a communication that it is time to take action, or that a person who can bring an idea into manifestation will come into contact with the questioner.
If the Magician lands reversed, the questioner is not able to bring her vision to reality. This could be because of self-doubt or because the questioner is listening to someone who tells her that some circumstance will keep her from accomplishing her goal.
The Magician may also land reversed in a tarot card reading if there is a person in the questioner’s reality who is abusing power, hoarding energy or believing that the perfect way to accomplish a goal must be figured out before one can take action. Sometimes one just needs to act, trusting that the Universe will provide further guidance on what appropriate steps to take next. When the Magician comes up reversed in a tarot card reading, one should take care to not dilly-dally, but, instead, to take the action that the questioner really knows should come next.
If the tarot card reader is using circular cards, the Magician may land to the right or to the left (to varying degees, i.e. it could land a little to the right, or almost all the way to reversed. If the Magician lands to the right in a tarot reading, the questioner is forcing some issue in his/her life, or there is a situation in which s/he feels forced to take certain actions. These are almost always good times to take a step back, and let the energy flow. See where it is going naturally, and join along.
If the Magician lands to the left, the questioner is holding herself back, or unable to access her power or energy. This is a good time to gather one’s strength and prepare for a big push towards goal accomplishment.
