The Fool, Major Arcana card 0

11th Apr 2008

Everything about tarot card reading is symbolic, and the Fool being the first card (yet numbered card zero) is no exception. The Fool has an I can do attitude of a beginner, a newbie who has yet to suffer losses. The Fool has an “I can do anything” attitude. The Fool, although adult, acts like a child, with the fresh perspective clear of prejudices. The Fool does not know how to lie. The Fool is one to defy social convention.

The Fool is the human consciousness pre-Ego. It is the Fool in us, which is most directly connected to source energy, or the cosmic consciousness. The Fool tells us to throw caution to the wind, and act upon impulse, even if the logical numbers don’t add up.

One may see the Fool land upright in a tarot reading if one is about to embark upon a journey, or new undertaking. Starting a new business in a new industry is a ripe situation for the Fool energy to arise. Because the Fool has ultimate faith in the Universe, and believes that all is possible, the Fool always expects that everything will work out, and the right people will come along at the exact right moment in time. Perhaps this is why the Fool experiences synchronicities and cosmic coincidences everywhere she goes.

Many believe the eternal trickster is also represented by the Fool, making it the only Major Arcana card to be represented in the modern playing deck of cards in America (the Joker).

We all embody the Fool when we make major changes in our lives, or in our thinking. It is the Fool in us who desires spiritual growth and personal transformation. You may also see the fool when you need to be more free-flowing in your thoughts, and cease being logical about something. Sometimes, we need to stop thinking and just go with our instincts and feelings.

The Fool is all about joy, and the Fool is usually a positive card to get in a reading. Although, because the Fool doesn’t care what others think, the Fool may be telling the person receiving the tarot card reading to relax, and stop worrying about others’ reactions.

The most probabilistic meaning of receiving the Fool upright, is that a new phase in one’s life is about to begin. Choose your path with Joy.

The Fool will come up reversed if one has just completed a journey of the type just described, or if one has an opportunity to change, but one is ignoring it, or not realizing the opportunity is right before her. Another possibility is that fear of looking foolish, or worry, is keeping the questioner from moving forward in life.

If you are using circular tarot cards, you may have the Fool come up with a card placement to the right or to the left. The Fool landing to the right may mean that the questioner is forcing herself to be spontaneous about something that she really isn’t feeling. There is a energy of forcing or creating resistance. Perhaps the questioner forces a new beginning before completing the former phase of growth.

The Fool landing to the left may mean that the questioner feels like new opportunities are passing by, and she is not able to get in tune with her Foolish, inner self. Perhaps she is hesitating when she knows she should be acting. Is lack of faith or shyness holding the questioner back?

Thank you for reading the tarot card reader.
